Coral Bells
This is the first pastel piece I’ve finished in a very long time. I drew Coral Bells, inspired by how flowers look when they’re lit from behind. I’ve always found something magical in that kind of light—it makes everything look delicate and glowing.
As a child, I went to art school, but over the years, life took me in other directions. I’ve tried to come back to art a few times, but it never quite stuck. I’m 58, and this time something finally clicked. I felt ready to really commit, and I’ve started a whole series of flower drawings that focus on backlighting. This Coral Bells drawing is the first one in that series.
It took me about a month to finish. Coming back to pastels after all this time was both challenging and exciting. This piece is special to me not just because of the subject, but because it marks the real start of coming back to something I’ve always loved.
