Wager Island

Wager Island
I took a trip to South America and Antarctica. I took a lot of pictures did a lot of scene sketching. Two of them stood out, so I turned them into pastel paintings. I am using Blue Earth and Girault pastels on Pastel Premier sanded paper. Wager Island was a challenge because there is little to no vegetation there, it is just a big rock sticking out of the sea. We could not get close enough to the island because the seas and reefs are treacherous and very dangerous. I tried to express how absolutely barren this landscape is. The sea and the sky give the picture some character. The Antarctic Sunset was from a picture taken as we left Antarctica and entered Drake's passage. When it is not foggy or raining/snowing, the skies are very dramatic. One can see storms coming together from two or three directions. These storm clouds can appear very ominous looking and one can see the rolling fog below and the precipitation coming down from above.
